Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe Friday 24 June 2011, 7pm St David's Hall, The Hayes, Cardiff From the spectacular dawn opening through to its wild and abandoned
closing pages, there are few pieces to match Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé
for sheer beauty of sensual orchestral sound. Written for Diaghilev's
Ballets Russes, Ravel created an Arcadian dreamworld, populated by
nymphs and shepards and the story of Daphnis, Chloé and the
god, Pan. This all-French programme, conducted by Thierry Fischer,
includes the choral version of Fauré's Pavane and Henri Dutilleux's
L'arbre des songes in celebration of the composer's 95th birthday. |
